Abstract Title:Cancer Oral Health Program: A Pilot Study on Enhancing Nurses’ Knowledge and Skills

Biography: Dr. Ibrahim Alananzeh is a researcher and educator specializing in oncology nursing and patient care. He holds a PhD and is affiliated with the University of Wollongong Dubai and the University of Wollongong Australia. His research focuses on improving cancer care through innovative nursing education programs, particularly in areas such as oral health management and patient-centered care. Dr. Alananzeh has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at international conferences. His work aims to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice, ensuring that healthcare professionals are equipped with the necessary skills to enhance patient well-being.

Research Interest: Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation often lead to significant oral health complications, including mucositis, xerostomia, and infections, which can severely impact patients' quality of life. Nurses play a critical role in assessing and managing these issues, yet studies highlight a lack of adequate training and knowledge among oncology nurses regarding oral health care. This study introduces the Cancer Oral Health (COH) Program, a pilot initiative designed to enhance nurses’ knowledge, confidence, and skills in managing oral health for cancer patients. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study involves a pre-test/post-test design to assess knowledge improvement, along with semi-structured interviews to explore nurses' experiences. The intervention consists of online learning modules, hands-on workshops, and post-training assessments. A total of 20 oncology nurses from Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) will participate in the program. Expected outcomes include improved nurse competency in oral health assessment, enhanced patient education, and strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration between nurses, oncologists, and dental professionals. The findings will contribute to the development of future training programs aimed at integrating oral health into routine oncology care, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
